When the valley is foggy, head above the clouds

30 October 2026, 3 min read

While fog wraps around Martin, the sun may be shining on the surrounding hills. Autumn and winter inversions create views over Turiec that are worth heading into the mountains for, even on a gloomy day.

Turiec lies in a basin surrounded by mountains. In calm weather, especially in autumn and winter, a temperature inversion can form here. Cold air stays low down and the valley is wrapped in fog or low cloud.

Higher up in the mountains, meanwhile, it can be clear and sunny. Seen from the hills, the fog looks like a white sea with the surrounding ridges rising out of it.

When is it worth going?

Your best chance of an inversion is on autumn and winter days, especially after a calm, clear night.

Before you set off, check the forecast for higher mountain areas and current webcam images. If it’s overcast in Martin but the sun is shining in the mountains, you may be in luck with beautiful views.

Not all fog means sunshine above the clouds, though. It also depends on how high the cloud is and on the weather at the time.

Where to go

One of the best-known places is Martinské hole, which in the right conditions offers views over the Turiec basin and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Other high spots and hiking trails on the edges of the basin can offer interesting views too. Choose your route to suit the weather, the season and your experience.

You don’t always have to do a full-day hike for a good view. But do check access and trail conditions in advance, and whether the place you’re planning to visit is really above the fog line.

What to bring

  • Warm clothes: it can be windy higher up, and the weather can change quickly.
  • Sturdy footwear: paths are often wet, icy or covered in snow.
  • A flask with a hot drink: especially on colder days.
  • A head torch: if you plan to watch the sunrise or sunset.
  • A charged phone and a map of the route: for easier navigation, especially in poor visibility.

In winter, also check the snow conditions beforehand. Some routes may require winter hiking equipment and experience.

Even a cloudy day can surprise you

Inversions are one of the reasons it’s worth getting to know Turiec outside the main tourist season too.

Sometimes all it takes is leaving the foggy valley and heading to higher ground. The reward can be sunshine, views of the surrounding mountains and an unforgettable sight of a sea of clouds.
