Turiec through the year: when to come and what to do

29 October 2026, 4 min read

Turiec has something to offer in every season. Spring and autumn draw people for quieter days in nature, summer for hiking and day trips, and winter for skiing and relaxation. So when is it worth coming?

Turiec is surrounded by the Malá and Veľká Fatra mountains. That makes it a place where you can plan an active weekend in the mountains, a family stay or a few days of rest.

The best time to come, though, depends on what you want to do during your stay.

Spring: quieter trips and nature waking up

In spring, nature in Turiec gradually wakes up. Meadows and forests turn green in the valleys, while snow can last for a long time on higher ground.

It’s a pleasant time for shorter walks, cycling and getting to know places you may not have time for in summer.

The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin is also worth a visit, with events devoted to folk traditions, including Easter customs.

Our tip: when planning spring hikes, expect mud, leftover snow and changeable weather. Choose routes according to current conditions, and watch out for any seasonal trail closures.

Summer: hiking, cycling and family trips

Summer offers the most options for those who want to spend their days outside.

A popular destination is the Gader Valley in the Veľká Fatra, which suits both walks and longer trips. Šútovo Waterfall in the Malá Fatra and the hiking trails on the surrounding ridges are also worth a visit.

Families with children can alternate trips into nature with swimming in Turčianske Teplice or visiting the museums in Martin.

Summer evenings, meanwhile, are perfect for sitting on the terrace, having a barbecue and spending time with family or friends.

Our tip: set off on longer hikes in the morning. In summer, storms can build in the mountains in the afternoon, so always check the forecast before you go.

Autumn: colourful forests and peace in the mountains

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to get to know Turiec. The forests of the Malá and Veľká Fatra turn yellow, orange and red, and popular spots tend to be quieter outside weekends.

In good weather, it’s worth heading to the Gader Valley or one of the viewpoints above the Turiec basin.

On colder mornings especially, you may come across a temperature inversion. While fog stays in the valley, the sun may be shining higher up on the hills.

If the weather isn’t right for hiking, you can visit the museums in Martin or relax at the spa.

Our tip: autumn is an excellent choice for couples and visitors looking for a quieter stay in nature. Just remember warmer clothes and shorter days.

Winter: skiing, mountains and relaxation

In winter, one of the main attractions is Martinské hole, where you can enjoy skiing and other winter activities when the snow is good.

If you prefer a quieter programme, you can choose accommodation with a fireplace or sauna, or visit the thermal spa in Turčianske Teplice.

Winter in Turiec has its charm away from the slopes too. On frosty days, hoar frost appears in the valleys, and during a temperature inversion, peaks can rise above a sea of fog.

Our tip: if you’re planning a stay over Christmas, New Year’s Eve or the winter school holidays, book your accommodation early. Before you travel, check the snow conditions and whether the ski resort is open.

So when is it worth coming?

  • With children: spring and summer offer plenty of options for trips and time outdoors.
  • For hiking: from late spring to autumn, depending on the difficulty of the route and conditions in the mountains.
  • For skiing: during the winter season, when the snow conditions allow it.
  • For rest and wellness: all year round, especially if you want to combine your stay with a visit to the spa.
  • For peace and photography: spring and autumn, when nature has a special atmosphere.

Turiec is worth getting to know all year round

You don’t have to wait for the summer holidays or the ski season. Every season in Turiec has its strengths, and even a short weekend can be enough for a nice trip, some rest and discovering new places.

Just choose your dates according to whether you’re more drawn to the mountains, culture, wellness or time with those close to you.
