A weekend in Turiec: what to fit into two days

31 October 2026, 5 min read

Turiec offers mountains, beautiful nature and an interesting history. In one weekend you can fit in a trip to the Malá Fatra, a walk through historic Martin and some rest at the spa. We've put together a simple plan that doesn't leave you rushing anywhere.

Turiec lies between the Malá and Veľká Fatra mountains, so there are plenty of options for short and full-day trips.

If you’re coming for the first time, we recommend spending one day in nature and the other getting to know the region. You can adjust the programme to the weather, the season and whether you’re travelling as a couple, with children or with friends.

Day one: discover the beauty of the Malá Fatra

For the first day, choose one of two trips, depending on whether you’d prefer a walk to a waterfall or mountain views.

Šútovo Waterfall: a trip worth making

Šútovo Waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural spots in the Malá Fatra. The water falls from a height of 38 metres, and a pleasant hiking route leads to it through the Šútovo Valley.

From the Rieka part of the village of Šútovo, you can reach it by following the blue trail markers. Allow about three to four hours there and back, depending on your pace and breaks.

Families with older children who are used to hiking can manage the trip too. The last part of the path is rocky, though, so we recommend sturdy footwear.

When you get back, you can treat yourself to lunch and a quiet afternoon at your chalet.

Martinské hole: for views over Turiec

If you’re more drawn to mountain views, head up to Martinské hole above Martin.

In good weather, it offers views over the Turiec basin and the surrounding mountain ranges. In the warmer months you can choose from hiking routes of varying difficulty. In winter, the area is known above all for skiing.

Check the weather and access conditions before you set off. In winter, special traffic rules apply on the road to Martinské hole.

Our tip: don’t plan too many activities for the first day. After your trip, leave time to rest, have dinner together or sit on the terrace of your accommodation.

Day two: get to know Martin and its history

You can start the second day with a visit to the Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin.

Museum of the Slovak Village

At the largest open-air ethnographic exhibition in Slovakia, you’ll discover what life in the Slovak countryside used to be like.

You can walk among traditional timber houses, farm buildings and other structures from different regions of Slovakia.

The museum makes a pleasant outing for families with children too. Allow a few hours, so you can see the whole site without rushing.

Events devoted to folk crafts and traditions also take place here during the year, so check the current programme and opening hours before you visit.

A walk through the centre of Martin

After the museum, you can move on to the centre of Martin, which holds an important place in Slovak history.

It was here that the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation was adopted in 1861, and Matica slovenská was founded two years later.

Stroll along the pedestrian zone, stop at SNP Square and take a look at the historic buildings in the town centre.

If you like art, the Turiec Gallery, housed in the former County Hall, is also worth a visit.

You can round off the day with a coffee or lunch in the centre before heading home.

What to do when it rains

If the weather isn’t on your side, you can swap hiking for some rest in Turčianske Teplice.

The local Spa & Aquapark offers thermal pools and wellness, which makes it a good alternative on colder days too.

Another option is the museums and galleries in Martin. Just plan your day around current opening hours, especially outside the summer season.

If you have an extra day: the Gader Valley

If you decide to stay in Turiec a little longer, we recommend also visiting the Gader Valley in the Veľká Fatra.

It begins near the village of Blatnica and is one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. It offers pleasant walks along a stream, rock formations and options for longer hikes.

You can go for just a short walk, or extend your day with a visit to the ruins of Blatnica Castle.

The valley is also popular with cyclists and families with children, and you can adapt the length of the trip to suit you.

Turiec is worth discovering bit by bit

In two days you won’t get through everything the region has to offer. And you don’t need to.

Choose one nice trip into nature, get to know a bit of local history and leave time for rest too. It’s this combination of mountains, culture and a peaceful atmosphere that makes Turiec such a pleasant place for a weekend stay.
